DOT Secretary

The U.S. Dept. of Transportation (DOT) has new leadership as former Congressman Sean Duffy (WI) was sworn-in as the 20th U.S. DOT Secretary. Duffy was confirmed by the Senate with strong bipartisan support – a vote of 28-0 in committee and a full Senate vote of 77-22.

Committee Leaders

The House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee (T&I) confirmed leaders for the next two years. Rep. Sam Graves (MO) will continue to serve as Chairman of the Committee, with Rep. Rick Larsen (WA) continuing to serve as the lead Democrat. Rep. David Rouzer (NC) takes on a new role as Chairman of the Highways and Transit Subcommittee, a key policy jurisdiction for our industry. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC) will continue to serve as the lead Democrat on the subcommittee.

State Ad Taxes

State budget season has begun for many legislatures, which brings renewed concern over advertising tax proposals. So far, some form of a digital advertising tax has been introduced in six states, with more expected. OAAA is part of a national coalition that will continue to track and report on any developments throughout the legislative sessions.

OSHA – Workplace Fines

The U.S. Dept. of Labor (DOL) announced adjustments to civil monetary penalties for workplace violations. Administered through DOL’s Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), the maximum penalty for willful or repeat workplace violations increases to $165,514, per instance, while the lower tier penalty for so-called “serious” violations raises slightly to $16,550.
