April 19, 2016 (Boca Raton, FL) – The Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA) presented 42 OBIE Awards for exceptional out of home (OOH) advertising design, including top honors for Best Billboard, Best Street Furniture/Transit/Alternative, Best Multi-Format, and Best Wall Mural campaigns. The winners of the 74th annual OBIE Awards were honored at a celebration during the 2015 TAB/OAAA Out of Home Media Conference & Expo in Boca Raton, FL.
“The OBIE Awards celebrate outstanding creativity and design, honoring those who make truly unforgettable advertising,” said OAAA Chief Marketing Officer Stephen Freitas. “This year’s winners demonstrate the countless ways that simplicity and beauty can be captured and expressed through the out of home advertising medium.”
Jackson Marketing Group was honored with the 2016 Best Billboard Campaign award for the “2015 Season Kickoff” campaign for Big League World Series. Inspired by photos of previous Big League World Series players and games, billboards in South Carolina featured images of the young athletes in exciting and moving baseball poses.
Downtown Partners took home the 2016 Best Multi-Format Campaign award for its “Space is Freaking Awesome” campaign for Adler Planetarium. This campaign appealed to lovers of space, as well as those who may not be as familiar with our solar system and beyond, with fun facts about the universe and its many wonders.
MRY & Colossal Media were presented with the first 2016 Best Wall Mural Campaign award for Adobe’s “Make It with Creative Cloud” campaign. Looking to empower new generations of artists, Adobe chose 10 out of 1,600 submissions from female artists in 60 different countries to create “The World’s Biggest Student Art Show.” Winning submissions were hand painted onto walls in the Bushwick area of Brooklyn, NY, a neighborhood known for its edgy urban murals.
Sukle Advertising and Design won the Best Street Furniture/Transit/Alternative Campaign for Denver Water’s “You Can’t Make This Stuff” campaign. Despite the city’s unusually wet year, Denver Water wanted to remind citizens it won’t always rain, so water conservation should remain top of mind. To do so, they used items that could be used to make “stuff,” such as Legos, clay, and string, to produce OOH ads inspiring water consumption awareness.
Gerry Graf, Barton F Graf 9000 and this year’s Chief OBIE Judge, added, “I am thrilled to see how the OOH industry continues to transform, better connecting clients with consumers, and I am excited to see how ad professionals are pushing the envelope in creative thinking. Tonight’s winners are a true testament to the power behind extraordinary OOH design.”
In addition to the top category awards, OAAA awarded 12 Gold OBIEs and 25 Silver OBIEs.
Iconic brand Corona Extra was honored with the 2016 OBIE Hall of Fame Award, recognizing the brand’s consistent excellence in OOH advertising design over many decades.
