OAAA’s Klein Spotlights OOH at Awards Ceremony

Date: September 27, 2019

OAAA’s Ken Klein, executive vice president government affairs, received a top award from his alma mater Ohio University on September 19. The Outstanding Federal Government Alumnus Award honors alumni involved in service to the federal government or engaged in civic debate of federal public policy.

Klein’s acceptance speech at the National Press Club featured large-screen examples of OOH formats, which he showed to demonstrate the importance of effective promotion.

Former White House Photographer Pete Souza was honored by Ohio University last year. A digital bus shelter in Washington, DC, congratulated Souza on his award.
Klein also showed a (vintage) congrats billboard posted near the hometown of a college debate champion.

Klein noted that higher education faces “grinding demographics” which will produce winners and losers in an intense competition for enrollment. “Best Kept Secret” is not a good marketing approach to burnish brand reputation, he said.

Successful colleges and universities – especially those in remote locations – must communicate their value and accomplishments to mass audiences, Klein said.

As a mentor, Klein challenged graphics-design student Micah Fluellen to create a billboard honoring the 60th anniversary of an Ohio University alum who covered the civil rights movement for JET Magazine (Alvin Adams). This photo of the student-designed billboard was displayed in Ohio, and widely shared via social media:

OAAA was sure to publicize Klein’s accomplishment, as well. A digital bus shelter in DC congratulated him on his award.
