Kale growing on a billboard? Bayer erects eye catching signs following Monsanto acquisition

Date: August 29, 2018

Area motorists may have noticed two unusual billboards lately — each devoid of words and featuring a green, leafy version of the Gateway Arch superimposed before the St. Louis skyline.

The billboards’ origins were revealed Monday morning, with a Bayer logo and text that reads: “St. Louis, let’s grow together.”

The signs are part of a public relations campaign from the German life sciences company, which just last week finally
started to combine its operations with Monsanto after completing its $63 billion acquisition of the Creve Coeur-based agribusiness giant, first announced nearly two years ago.

One of the billboards stands along eastbound lanes of Highway 40 (Interstate 64), near 14th Street downtown, with the other located above a northbound stretch of Interstate 170, near Olive Boulevard.

The company says the billboards “represent Bayer’s commitment to the St. Louis region” and that those are, indeed, living plants — including kale, collard greens and three varieties of chard. The crops that make up the irrigated displays will later be harvested and donated to the St. Louis Area Foodbank, Bayer said.
