It's been more than 22 years since Kathleen VanSlyke was shot dead in her car on the city's Southeast Side. Her killer has never been found.

On July 23, 1993, at 3:30 p.m., VanSlyke, 45, was shot at close range in her vehicle as it sat in a parking lot near Burton Street and Eastern Avenue SE.

After she was shot, VanSlyke's vehicle rolled backward and collided with a building. The incident occurred in a busy area flanked by businesses like the former Old Kent Bank, Silver Derby Tavern and Bucks.

The Kent Metro Cold Case Team, partnering with the Grand Rapids Police and Silent Observer, are relaunching efforts to solve the case by setting up a billboard near the scene of the crime, at Burton and Eastern.

The billboard, which was put up on Monday, Nov. 2, will remain for 30 days.
