Police Using Billboards to Catch Criminals

Date: July 14, 2015

Summary:
New technology is helping police catch wanted criminals.

Body:
JANESVILLE (WIFR) – New technology is helping police catch wanted criminals.

Lamar Company has electronic billboards set up around town and Janesville Police say they can use the structures to post warrant pictures as soon as they are issued.

Chief Moore says the department has received more anonymous tips than usual since starting the billboard program.

“Really effective. In fact, we’ve had someone turn himself in because of it. Wanteds, missing persons, and we’ve even used them for the police Christmas card,” said Janesville Police Chief David Moore.

In addition to the billboards, Janesville has a police YouTube page where we can watch body camera recordings and they’ve also started using a new website called raidsonline.com.

Police say the public can use that website to log on and track activity. So if we see a patrol car in our neighborhood, we can find out why it’s there from the comfort of our own home.
