Outdoor Industry National Convention

Celebrating Revolutions in Outdoor Media

Washington , June 4, 2003 The 2003 Outdoor Advertising Association of America/Traffic Audit Bureau National Convention and Trade Show is scheduled to take place on June 8–10 in Washington, D.C. at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.  “The theme of the convention is outdoorevolution and can be pronounced either outdoor ‘revolution’ or outdoor ‘evolution’,” said Nancy Fletcher, President and CEO of OAAA. “The tagline reflects the emphasis of the meeting, which celebrates the innovative changes that have advanced the outdoor industry over the past several years.”


The program is expected to attract more than 800 outdoor advertising industry executives, advertisers, agency professionals, and public officials. This is the first time that the OAAA and the TAB have organized a joint convention. Another first-time event scheduled at this convention will be the presentation of the annual OBIE Awards, which this year celebrate 61 years of creative excellence in outdoor advertising. Recognized as the oldest creative advertising awards show in the nation, the OBIE Awards will include a gala dinner and cocktail party. Also planned for the evening is the presentation of outdoor industry awards that recognize outstanding long-term contributions made by individuals active in the industry.


The opening keynote address will be given by Lowry Mays, the Chairman and CEO of Clear Channel Worldwide.  Public policy presentations will be delivered by invited guests Majority House Speaker Tom Delay (R-TX), Federal Highway Administration  Administrator Mary Peters and Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge. Other notable presenters include political pundit James Carville and CNBC financial analyst Ron Insana.


The advertising industry will be represented by agency leaders and corporate directors including The Martin Agency President Mike Hughes; Crispin Porter + Bogusky President and Partner Jeff Hicks; Carmichael Lynch Chairman and CEO Lee Lynch; and TBWA\Worldwide President and CEO Jean-Marie Dru.


The results of important research initiatives will be released at the national convention including a traffic safety study conducted by Virginia Tech and the results of the Arbitron Outdoor ratings test conducted in Atlanta last fall. Nielsen Outdoor will unveil plans for a passive outdoor ratings test that will be conducted in Chicago next September.
