OAAA Announces 2003 OBIE Judges Panel Convened March 14 in New York

Washington, D.C. (March 17, 2003) — The OAAA is pleased to announce the seven member judging panel for the 2003 OBIE Awards. The OBIE Awards recognize creative excellence in outdoor advertising.


Judging took place on Friday, March 14, 2003, at New York’s W Hotel in Times Square, where the team reviewed close to 1,500 images. The 61st Annual OBIE Awards will be presented during the 2003 OAAA/TAB National Convention and Trade Show in Washington, D.C. The awards presentation is part of a gala dinner on June 10 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. The 61st Annual OBIE Judges are:


Sal Devito, DeVito/Verdi, Chief Judge


Sal is the co-founder and executive creative director of DeVito/Verdi New York. He has won all of the major advertising awards, including an armful of OBIEs along the way. Sal teaches at the School of Visual Arts and was given the Distinguished Artist-Teacher Award in 2001.


Jonathan Bond, kirshenbaum bond creative network


Jon Bond is the co-chairman and co-founder of the kirshenbaum bond creative network. The agency is best known for originating the ground breaking advertising campaign for Kenneth Cole and establishing Snapple as a household name.


Edgar Cardoze, Dieste Harmel & Partners


Edgar has over 29 years of advertising experience and is a recognized leader in the Hispanic media and marketing field. At Dieste Harmel & Partners, Edgar heads up one of the largest and most sophisticated planning and buying operations in the Hispanic market.   


Mendi LeBlanc, Lamar Advertising Company


Mendi is the director of creative services at the corporate office of Lamar in Baton Rouge . She remains active in the Baton Rouge community as a member of the local Advertising Federation and is a recipient of several local awards.  


David Oakely, Boone/Oakley


David is the co-founder and creative director of Boone/Oakley in Charlotte . He has won One Show Pencils, Cannes Lions and Clio’s. But his favorite award is the 2002 OBIE Best of Show for the Charlotte Hornets.   


Mark Scheider, TBWA\Chiat\Day


Mark is a Senior Designer in the Los Angeles office. He has won several awards for putting big black type on a solid yellow background (PMS 109). Recently, he has branched out into other colors: Apple (White), XM Satellite Radio (Black), Infiniti and Nissan (Sterling Mist, Icelandic Pearl and Sunlit Sand).


Dan O’Shea, Fairway Outdoor Advertising


Dan is the General Manager of Fairway’s Piedmont Triad markets. He is the recipient of the Augusta Advertising Federation/AAF Silver Medal Award as well as two OBIE Awards and several AAF National ADDY Awards.
