FBI Honors Outdoor Advertising Advocate with Community Leadership Award
OAAA’s Ken Klein Recognized for Digital Billboard Partnership

(Washington) – The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FB) today presented the Outdoor Advertising Association of American’s (OAAA) Ken Klein with the Director’s Community Leadership Award in recognition of his contributions and assistance in taking the bureau’s Digital Billboard Initiative to a new level of effectiveness and success. FBI Director Robert Mueller presented Klein, OAAA’s executive vice president of government relations, with the award at a ceremony at FBI Headquarters.

FBI Director Robert S Mueller III said, “Today’s winners are building bridges between the FBI and communities in which we serve, helping us to fight crime.”

Klein is the first recipient of the Director’s Community Leadership Award to be presented by the FBI Office of Public affairs. Michael P. Norton, assistant director, FBI Office of Public Affairs, said, “This year’s recipients have embraced the highest ideals in leadership.”

For more than a decade, Klein has worked closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement to offer public safety messaging on billboards. As digital technology grew, he coordinated efforts across the county to post fugitive alerts on digital billboards, formalizing a public service partnership between the FBI and outdoor advertising industry. Klein also took the lead in 2010 to develop the Digital Billboard Alert Network, an automated online system allowing the FBI to quickly creative fugitive alerts and distribute to digital billboard operators.

Today, 48 fugitives wanted by the FBI have been apprehended as a direct result of digital billboard publicity.

“Ken has been a catalyst for the outdoor advertising industry in its efforts to support community service and public safety,” said OAAA President & CEO Nancy Fletcher. “When he first arrived at OAAA more than 10 years ago, he knew the industry should be supporting law enforcement and the federal government on a grander scale, and he quickly figured out how. His efforts have transformed an industry, serviced communities, and no doubt saved lives.”

Ken joined OAAA in 2001 with more than 25 years of experience in politics, press, and government. Prior to OAAA, Ken worked for US Sen. Bob Graham (D-FL) for 15 years, including five years as his chief of staff. Previously, Ken worked at the Florida Department of Transportation, and The Associated Press.

The Director’s Community Leadership Award was formally created in 1990 as a way to honor individuals and organizations for their efforts in combating crime, terrorism, drugs, and violence in America.
